Not far from the main buildings there is a public parking lot, where you can leave your car for the duration of the tour or a visit to the café set up in the palace interiors.
Why is it worth visiting the Gorzanów Palace?
The palace in Gorzanów is a large complex which, apart from the main residence, also includes residential and farm buildings, curtain walls, outbuildings and a park which was one of the first in Silesia to be arranged in the Baroque style.
The palace itself began to be built in the second half of the 16th century. At that time, on the initiative of Heinrich von Ratschin, a Renaissance manor house was built, which was rebuilt in the Baroque style and expanded to its current size less than 100 years later. These modernizations were carried out by Count Johann Friedrich von Herberstein, who received the Gorzanów estate from his wife. The Herbersteins were the owners of the residence until the 1930s, when it was sold to the city of Bystrzyca. Later it was still in private hands, and currently it belongs to the Gorzanów Palace Foundation, which is trying to restore the monument to its former glory.
The years when the estate was in the hands of the Herbersteins were a time of particular prosperity for it. Thanks to the efforts of subsequent owners, both the residence itself and the park surrounding it looked exceptionally impressive. From the second half of the 19th century, it was also possible to visit them - for several decades, the palace in Gorzanów was open to the public. There was also a court theatre there, which was a branch of the theatre in Lądek-Zdrój.
Unfortunately, the 20th century was not so kind, and the complicated post-war history that befell many Lower Silesian residences also affected the Gorzanów Palace. The history of the estate in this period is therefore connected with nationalization, resettlements from the eastern borderlands and gradual fall into ruin after its final abandonment in the 1960s.
